Tackling Technology in the K-12 Class

We get the picture! Traveling to institute sites is a problem this summer. We have devised an alternative set of professional development programs that you may complete as independent studies/projects. These new options are available for K-12 teachers in all subjects as well as other educators and are summarized below with links to additional details.

There are limited slots for each program. Applications received after June 20 will be reviewed if spaces are still available.
Participants may begin independent projects as soon as they receive instructions from the CSMTE. Projects are due by August 15th except for those that require classroom implementation. Implementation assignments are due by December 1st 2008.



Reading and Thinking about Science
View details & application
As a participant, you will choose a book from an extensive list (view details for list). The book will be mailed to you- along with detailed instructions for completing your assignment. [Includes reading credit.]

Option A: Report (1.0 CEUs, $10 Registration Fee)
Option B: Report + Lesson Plan (2.0 CEUs, $20 Registration Fee)
Option C: Report + Lesson Plan + Implementation (3.0 CEUs, $30 Registration Fee)

Lights Camera Action View details & application
You will learn to use Microsoft Producer (free download) to create a video project appropriate for use in the classroom. A tutorial and sample video will be provided. You will submit your project electronically- to be shared with other participants i fyou wish. [Includes technology credit.]

EarthCaching: North Carolina's Wild Places- A Vacation Assignment View details & application
If you register for this program, you will choose from a list of state parks and other interesting eastern North Carolina Sites and complete an EarthCaching assignment for the site using a GPS receiver. Instruments are available for loan from the Center for this project. Participants need access to a digital camera as well. [Includes technology credit.]

Option C: Report + Lesson Plan + Implementation (3.0 CEUs, $30 Registration Fee)

Online Science Modules: Promoting Standards in Science and Mathematics View details & application
You will choose from online modules directly related to objectives in the NC Standard Course of Study for Science. There are four modules in each of the following areas: K-2 Science, 3-5 Science, 6th Grade Science, 7th Grade Science, 8th Grade Science, Earth/Environmental Science, Physical Science, Biology, and Chemistry.

1.2 CEUs per module, $40 registration fee per module
